Ken Burns, the acclaimed documentary film producer, told CNN that the relocation of illegal immigrants was akin to the rise of the Nazis before the Holocaust.One of the Rules for Radicals is to avoid honest debate. Instead, you must polarize the conversation and demonize your opponent.
Burns' comments were very incendiary. They strike an emotional chord while deflecting a rational discussion of the bigger issue.
Of course, Burns' underlying motive was to promote his latest documentary although some viewers may choose to tune out.
At the center of the conversation was the decision by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to transport 50 illegal aliens to the wealthy enclave of Martha's Vineyard where former president Obama owns a 30-acre estate.
Burns told CNN's John Berman that DeSantis' decision comes "straight out of the authoritarian playbook".
“It’s basically saying that you can use a human life that is as valuable as yours or mine and to put it in a position of becoming a political pawn in somebody’s authoritarian game."
“This is what’s so disturbing about DeSantis -- to use human beings, to weaponize human beings for a political purpose.”
Using human beings for political purposes? Isn't that what Democrats do? They have weaponized half the country:
- Illegals
- Women
- Children
- Laborers
- Minorities
- LGBTTQQIAAP
The left has brilliantly mastered the technique of accusing their opposition of those things which they themselves are guilty.
In any case, Burns is obviously skilled at conducting historical research. Maybe he should apply those skills to investigate what is really going on at the border.
For instance, the Trump administration was blasted after it was reported that illegals were being housed in steel cages -- the very same cages used by the Obama administration.
The New York Times reported that the cages and trailers are still there, and that living conditions are little improved under the Biden administration. Immigrant children are still being separated from their families, and they complain about food poisoning and having to do laundry in a bathroom sink.
As for relocation, transporting illegals to a paradise like Martha's Vineyard is not the same as the Nazis sending Jews and gypsies to concentration camps.
It's horrendous and offensive to even make that comparison.
Neither Burns nor CNN mentioned that the Biden administration has been relocating illegals since last summer. Is Biden a Nazi?
The affluent residents of Martha's Vineyard have designated their exclusive paradise as a sanctuary for illegal immigrants. However, the welcome mat was quickly rolled up, and the immigrants bussed out to a military facility.
Seemingly, 50 illegals were too much of a burden on an island that welcomes tens of thousands of visitors every summer.
In stark contrast, the less affluent border towns have to deal with millions of illegals in a humanitarian crisis that is all but ignored or even denied by CNN and the Biden administration.
I sent the following email to Mr. Burns:
Seriously? You really believe that sending migrants to Martha's Vineyard compares to the Holocaust?
Did you know that last summer the Biden administration sent 70 flights of immigrants from the border to Jacksonville, Florida?
Governor DeSantis was advised of the flights by local law enforcement. No one in Biden's administration would reveal details about the flights. The immigrants were then bussed north and south to unknown destinations.
Were you aware of the steel cages where the Biden administration housed immigrant children along the Texas border? The media was not permitted to film the conditions.
I'm so disappointed that you are carrying the Democrat's water. Your comment is so dishonest and lacks an understanding of what is really going on at the border.
A credible journalist would conduct a thorough investigation rather than parroting the politically correct narrative.
I will not be watching any more of your projects. You have to own what you say, and it says to me that you're willing to write-off an entire segment of your audience.
One of the illegals flown to Jacksonville is accused of murder. He lied to the Border Patrol about his age and status. The man should have been detained at the border. In Florida, the man got a job at a grocery store but then killed his employer -- a legal Mexican immigrant.
A final thought on the residents of Martha's Vineyard: why don't they demonstrate their compassionate concern for illegals by moving to El Paso, Texas where 1,000 illegals sleep on the streets every night.
Or maybe they can build a tent refuge on Obama's 30-acres where the illegals can enjoy a million-dollar view.
Otherwise, stop with the phony, altruistic claptrap.
