80% of Croatia was occupied by Ottoman Turkey for just 150 years (most of Serbia outside of Vojvodina 320 years, North Serbia ie Vojvodina also 150). There are parts of what is today considered Croatia that even then were outside of the Ottoman possession for that century and a half, but under Venetian and Habsburg rule.
The custom of tattooing like this only applied to Roman Catholics of Bosnia-Herzegovina, some of whom, but by no means all, self-identified as “Croatian”. And it was done up to the 1950s, whereas Bosnia-Herzegovina was taken away from the Ottoman Turkey in 1878 and given to the Austro-Hungarian mandate at the Congress of Berlin.
So three quarters of a century later Bosnian-Herzegovinian Roman Catholics were still tattooing their mostly female children when the possibility of abduction by Turkish jihadists was non-existent.
